Beth Jannery was groomed for success.  Taught to always dress for the position above her, and to look good on the outside in order to feel good on the inside, she learned never to be content with where she was or what she had. No matter what she accomplished, nothing made her happy. None of the usual distractions–alcohol, sex, shopping–made her feel better. Her book, Simple Grace, describes her journey from manic-depressive journalist covering the Pentagon to spiritual mom blooming where planted. “I found Grace and a sense of peace and a sense of serenity in the very simple, basic stuff that was right in front of me all along.”

In our interview, Beth describes:

  • What rock bottom looked like for her.
  • Everyday miracles, beyond the burning bush.
  • Why you should cross half the shit off of your to-do list and sit the hell down.
  • How to develop boundaries with one word:  NO.
  • Why we should give up on the idea that we’re in control.
  • How prayer works (even if you’re not religious).

We also talked about her messed up television role models, about safety nets and the courage to cut them down, becoming an I-don’t-give-a-shit sort of person, and telling the truth. “I always have to look at myself and say, ok, what’s the truth here?  Do I like what I’m doing right now?  Do I like how this day is going?”
