I got an email the other day in response to my post on author platforms.

Anything out there on how to build a platform?  email lists, followings? I have no idea of how to get them or how to measure them. We have to be doing something for these to happen. So what if we aren’t. Sounds like we are being discriminated against. Thoughts?

So….where do I start?

First, let’s talk about the notion of discrimination. (And we’re not talking about white privilege here, or the lack of authors of color, which is a real thing.)

Then, let’s hit the platform-building thing. And I’m going to assume you don’t have a business, or at the very least, an online leg to your business, which necessitates that you have a social media presence and an email list…
