“This is the hardest thing you will ever do.”
That’s what Gordo, the instructor of our Intro to Scuba Diving class, told us while he scrawled his name on the blackboard. Gordo was a big guy, nearly 300 pounds of flesh that couldn’t have been easy to squeeze into a wet suit, so I wasn’t inclined to doubt his sincerity.
Walt and I had recently summited Denali—a grueling 28-day high-altitude adventure in the arctic carrying 80-pound expedition packs. We looked at each other and rolled our eyes. I wasn’t about to brag about that, but everything in me wanted to point out that I’d given birth twice, which was decidedly the hardest thing I’d ever done, yet I thought better of engaging the argument. (You try squeezing a baby out your hoo-hah!)
We sat through the initial classroom tutorial—stuff like, don’t come up too fast if you’ve gone deep or you’ll die of the bends—then we took the show poolside. In we jumped with our wet suits and masks. Next came learning to weight our belt and inflate our vest, negotiate a tank and a regulator, swim underwater several lengths, then haul ourselves out with a load. All in all, this wasn’t the BFD Gordo had made it out to be.
Here’s what Gordo got right, though: proper instruction makes all the difference. He broke down something that might have seemed impossible—breathing underwater—into manageable steps. Weight belt. Vest inflation. Regulator. Swim. Surface. Nobody drowned. Mission accomplished.
And that’s the thing about writing a book.
You’ll hear people tell you it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever done, and maybe for them, that’s the truth. But if you’ve built a business, written regular blog posts for years, hosted a podcast, or [insert pain-in-the-ass activity requiring consistency and focus]—you’ve already done something most people can’t be bothered to do.
The difference? You had a process. You broke it down. And ideally, you had someone show you the ropes so you didn’t waste time flailing around in the deep end.
Today, Brick by Brick: The No Bullsh*t Guide to Building Books That Get Read officially launches.
This is the tutorial that saves you years of trial and error. The one that shows you exactly how to break the “overwhelming” task of writing a book into manageable daily work. The one that keeps you from making expensive mistakes with publishing scammers or wasting months chasing the wrong audience.
Here’s what you get:
The brick-by-brick methodology that stops writer paralysis in its tracks. You’re not staring at 200 blank pages wondering where to start. You’re writing one story, one framework, one case study at a time—then assembling them into a cohesive structure.
Clear guidance on AI usage—what it can actually do (research, grammar checking, brainstorming) versus what it absolutely cannot do (replace your expertise, authentic voice, or hard-won insights). Because that guy who had ChatGPT write his entire 35,000-word book? He’s screwed. Picture him lying on shore battling the bends.
The real costs, timelines, and trade-offs of traditional, hybrid, and self-publishing. No marketing fantasies. Just the straight truth about what each path requires so you can make smart business decisions instead of ego-driven ones.
Platform-building strategies that support rather than derail your writing. You’ll learn to test content with real readers, establish expertise, and create anticipation for your finished work—without falling into the endless content creation trap.
Downloadable templates and frameworks for the most popular nonfiction genres, plus guides for creating compelling titles and other resources that eliminate months of guesswork.
